Dokolo By-Election: UPC's Sarah Aguti Secures Landslide Victory

Sarah Aguti Nyangkori, representing the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), clinched victory in the Dokolo District Woman parliamentary by-election, garnering 23,044 votes, as officially announced yesterday evening.

In a hotly contested by-election, she triumphed over five other contenders. Among them were Dr. Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal, the flag bearer for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, and Janet Rose Adongo Elau of the NRM, along with Harriet Ageno of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Dr. Esther Akullo Obot Otada, and Rebecca Arao, all running as independents.

Interestingly, UPC secured a decisive victory even at the polling station where the late Ogwal traditionally cast her vote, as confirmed by Oyam North county Member of Parliament, Dr. Eunice Apio Otuko. However, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party leader, Mr. Patrick Oboi Amuriat, promptly alleged electoral malpractice during the process, citing instances of voter bribery and transportation of voters to polling stations.

Dokolo boasts 173 polling stations, with approximately 95,693 registered voters eligible to participate in this parliamentary by-election. Regarding Aguti, she holds a degree in Social Works and Social Administration from Uganda Christian University, Mukono, and has a background in social work. Aguti emerged as the official flag bearer for UPC following the party's District Conference held at Dokolo Catholic Parish on February 19, 2024.

In the 2021 District Woman parliamentary race, she contested against Cecilia Ogwal but lost. Ogwal, running on the FDC ticket, retained her seat with 32,223 votes, while Aguti secured 10,460 votes.
