Former Rubaga South Member of Parliament and actor, Hon. Kato Lubwama, passes away

The sudden demise of Hon. Kato Lubwama, former Member of Parliament for Rubaga South and well-known actor, has left many saddened. The cause of his death has not been officially disclosed, but reports suggest that he suffered a heart attack while undergoing a routine checkup at Stana Medical Center in Bunamwaya.

Announcement of Lubwama’s Death

The news of Lubwama’s passing was first shared by Andrew Mukasa, a business associate and events promoter, who made the announcement through TikTok.

A Renowned Actor and Playwright

Lubwama rose to prominence in the 1990s as an actor and playwright. He was the founder of Diamonds Ensemble, a theater group that played a crucial role in reviving the art-form in Uganda.

Additionally, Lubwama established Diamonds Production and B24 TV.

Transition to Radio and Notable Partnership

With declining interest in theater during the 2000s, Lubwama made a transition to FM radio. He gained further recognition through his work on CBS FM Kalisoliso program.

His partnership with fellow actors Abby Mukiibi and Patricko Mujjuka resulted in a popular morning show that competed for the top spot in Uganda’s radio landscape. On the show, Lubwama was known by his performance name, Bisso.

From Comedian to Politician

In a surprising career move, Lubwama entered politics and was elected as the member of parliament for Rubaga South in 2016.

Infamously, when questioned about his relatively low profile in parliament, he responded, “I came to eat,” implying that his primary motivation for seeking a parliamentary seat was personal gain rather than serving his constituents.

Lubwama lost his seat in the 2021 General Elections.

Post-Parliamentary Life

Following his departure from parliament, Lubwama made efforts to rebuild his presence in the entertainment industry. He started a YouTube channel and made regular appearances on various digital platforms, including NBS TV’s UnKut and Kasuku Live.

Blaming Political Rivals

Unapologetic about his limited parliamentary record, Lubwama attributed the end of his political career to what he described as the “lies” spread by his political opponents in the National Unity Platform, led by fellow artist Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine.

Lubwama expressed no regrets about leaving parliament, as it allowed him to focus on his private business ventures, such as trading in maize flour.

Remembering Kato Lubwama

Kato Lubwama, born on August 16, 1970, was a well-known figure in the entertainment industry. He had a twin brother named Isaac Wasswa, who passed away several years ago. His contribution to theater and his transition into politics left a lasting impact on Uganda’s cultural and political landscape.
