William W. Popp is the new U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, succeeding Natalie E. Brown. His appointment was confirmed on July 27, 2023.

KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — William W. Popp has been appointed as the new U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, replacing Natalie E. Brown.

The announcement was made on Platform X (formerly Twitter) by the U.S. Mission in Uganda. They expressed their enthusiasm for Ambassador Popp’s leadership and their commitment to strengthening relations with Uganda.

“U.S. Mission in Uganda is delighted to introduce U.S. Ambassador William W. Popp. We look forward to fostering even stronger and more impactful relations with the people of Uganda under his leadership.”, the statement reads in part.

Ambassador Popp is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor. He was confirmed by the Senate as Ambassador to Uganda on July 27, 2023.

Prior to this appointment, he served as Ambassador to Guatemala from 2020 to 2023 and as the Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Mission in Brazil, where he also acted as Chargé d’Affaires a.i. from 2018 to 2020.

His previous roles include Political Counselor and Acting Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Kenya (2015-2017) and Director of the Office of Regional Economic Policy and Summit Coordination in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs of the State Department for the 2015 Summit of the Americas.

Ambassador Popp received Senior Leadership Training and earned a Master of Sciences degree in National Security Strategy at the National War College in Washington, D.C. from 2012-2013. Before that, he held positions as Deputy Principal Officer and Acting Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Sao Paulo, Brazil (2009-2012).

His overseas assignments also include roles at the U.S. Embassy in Colombia, Angola, and Nicaragua.

Ambassador Popp holds a Bachelor’s degree from Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri, and a master’s degree from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He has received numerous State Department awards and is fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese.
