KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Ugandan-born Australian physician, Dr. Aggrey Kiyingi, who was acquitted of his wife’s 2005 murder, has passed away at the age of 68, as announced by his family.

Mayimuna Nakayiira Kiyingi, his wife, shared the somber news of his passing in Australia on social media, expressing profound sadness and stating that he peacefully departed from their lives.

She paid tribute to her husband as a loving father and a cherished friend, highlighting the joy and warmth he brought to their shared moments. Details about funeral and memorial services will be communicated in due course.

Dr. Kiyingi married Nakayiira in 2009, four years after the murder of his first wife, Robinah Erina Kayaga Kiyingi, a prominent anti-corruption advocate, who was shot multiple times in her car in 2005.

In December 2006, the Kampala High Court acquitted Dr. Kiyingi of the murder charges. Justice Opio Aweri found that the prosecution had failed to prove its case against the Sydney-based cardiologist, who had consistently denied involvement in his wife’s killing.

The judge also acquitted two other suspects in the murder, including a police officer and a businessman, along with a soldier who later died in prison. Had they been convicted, the suspects could have faced the death penalty.

A month before his acquittal, trial assessors had recommended Dr. Kiyingi’s acquittal, citing insufficient evidence.
