Jinja, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — A woman who identifies herself as Alison Anna Gabula Nadiope has taken legal action against the Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Gabula Nadiope, in the United Kingdom (UK). She alleges that she is still legally married to him.

On September 7, the Busoga Kingdom introduced Ms. Jovia Mutesi as the Inebantu (Queen) to the Kyabazinga in preparation for their wedding scheduled for November 18.

In a letter believed to be from Mrs. Nadiope’s lawyers at Anne Cuthbert Solicitors Ltd in the UK, they state that Ms. Alison Nadiope married the Kyabazinga in December 2016 and has two children with him. She is willing to provide a copy of the marriage certificate and wedding photographs if required.

The letter further notes that the Kyabazinga has not divorced her and is planning to enter into another marriage. It cautions that this could lead to a charge of bigamy under UK law, carrying a penalty of up to six months in imprisonment.

Mr. Andrew Ntange, the spokesperson for Busoga Kingdom, dismissed the letter as “negative energy” and stated that they would not give it any attention. He emphasized that wedding preparations were proceeding as planned.

Ms. Justine Kasule Lumumba, head of media and entertainment on the organizing committee of the Busoga royal wedding, denied receiving any such communication. She explained that Busoga Kingdom’s cultural traditions dictate that the Kyabazinga is responsible for presenting the Inebantu (Queen), and they will accept her once he introduces her on November 18.

Ms. Kasule also announced an upcoming Royal Dinner Bouquet event to be held at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala on October 27. This event will provide an opportunity for friends of Busoga, corporate entities, humanitarian agencies, and partners to participate in the royal celebrations.
