Apac, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Dr. James Eyul, head of epidemics at Entebbe International Airport, tragically passed away over the weekend when a speeding vehicle struck him. Mr. Vianney Luggya, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson, confirmed the loss, describing the deceased as an aviation medicine and public health specialist at the airport. Additionally, Dr. Eyul was the owner of Kazuri Medical, a clinic located at the airport that offered port health services.

The widow, Ms. Pamela Eyul, shared the heartbreaking details, mentioning that the accident occurred on his return from Lira, where he had gone to hand over his role as captain for Lira Golf Club. The vehicle broke down near Migera, leading to a fateful collision with a speeding truck around 1 am on Saturday.

Survived by four children—Linda, Warren, Joy, and Wayne—Dr. Eyul, 54, began his medical career at Nsambya Hospital before moving to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Tororo District. He dedicated his expertise to various non-governmental organizations, including the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) during the LRA war in northern Uganda.

Ms. Eyul revealed that her husband transitioned to the airport and civil aviation in February 2014, where he served as a public health and aviation medical specialist until his untimely demise. Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the Ministry of Health spokesperson, expressed the deep loss, emphasizing Dr. Eyul’s pivotal role in managing aviation health and port health services at Entebbe International Airport during epidemics.

Former co-worker Ms. Daphine Ayebare reflected on Dr. Eyul’s humility and composure, even in challenging situations. Dr. Andrew Nsawotebba, the head of Entebbe Airport Health Laboratory, acknowledged Dr. Eyul’s instrumental role during the Covid-19 pandemic, describing him as a wise and open-minded leader who faced challenges with unwavering positivity.

Despite the profound impact of Dr. Eyul’s passing, his colleagues remember him as a great team player. Dr. Nsawotebba recounted a challenging moment during the pandemic when they received a directive to set up a Covid-19 Airport Health Laboratory capable of testing over 3,000 samples a day in just two weeks. Dr. Eyul, with endless optimism and a solution-oriented mindset, assured him it was achievable.
