Nebbi, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Enforcement Officers busted a smuggling operation, nabbing over 3,000 liters of cooking oil from the Democratic Republic of Congo. They seized 200 jerry cans of Nzuri cooking oil at Nyaravur Trading Center in the early hours of Saturday. Cooking oil is a hot item for smugglers sneaking into Uganda through various borders.

The Pakwach Enforcement Head received a tip-off about a trader sneaking in oil from Congo through Parombo Town under the cover of darkness. Acting fast, they set up an ambush and caught the culprit red-handed around 3:50 am as he arrived with his fully-loaded truck, UBL 444U.

The driver bolted into the bushes, leaving his truck behind, which was then taken to the URA area station. Upon inspection, they found 200 jerry cans of Kenya-made Nzuri pure vegetable oil.

Smuggling violates the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA), carrying penalties of up to five years in prison or a fine equal to 50% of the goods’ value, or both. The owner of the smuggling vehicle can also face a fine of up to USD 5,000.
