AKA Dead: South African Rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes Shot and Killed

The 35-year-old South African rap legend Kiernan Forbes, known to his fans as AKA, was shot and killed in Durban.

Kiernan Forbes, better known as AKA, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Durban. He was 35 years old. South African music fans are shocked by AKA’s sudden death. 

KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — South African hip-hop icon AKA, also known as Kiernan Forbes, was shot and killed by unknown assailants in Durban. The sudden passing of AKA has shocked the South African music scene, leaving fans in disbelief.

  • ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed that Florida Road has been closed since the shooting incident on Florida Road in which two people have been confirmed dead, one of whom was a famous rapper.
  • In social media posts, it was reported that AKA was scheduled to perform as part of his birthday celebrations at YUGO, a Durban night club.
  • Some of his biggest collaborations include Burna Boy, Da Les, and Jr.’s All Eyes On Me, and Diamond Platnumz’s Make Me Sing.

Police statement on AKA's shooting

AKA was a prominent figure in the South African music industry, having released several number-one albums and collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry. 

His most notable collaborations include All Eyes On Me (featuring Burna Boy, Da Les & Jr.) and Make Me Sing with Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz. His passing is a great loss to the music scene and he will be greatly missed. 

Police in KwaZulu-Natal say the suspects opened fire on the multi-award winner and his bodyguard while they were leaving a restaurant on Florida Road.

Another individual thought to be AKA’s bodyguard, sustained injuries, while an unidentified person, believed to be an old friend of AKA, was killed.

In a later statement, police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that two murder cases were being investigated, and that police have not yet established the motives for the murders.

He confirmed that one of the dead was a popular musician. According to reports, AKA was standing outside of the Wish Restaurant when he was shot by drive-by gunmen.

“I can confirm that two men were killed and one of them is a well-known rapper. Police will not be releasing any names of the victims yet until a full investigation is completed” said Netshiunda, as reported by News24.

Two unknown cars are believed to have opened fire just before 10pm. Speaking to IOL news agency, stunned patrons at a nearby restaurant said AKA had been standing outside Wish when he was gunned down.

Several witnesses at a nearby restaurant spoke with the IOL news agency and said AKA appeared to be standing outside Wish when two unknown vehicles opened fire.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, confirmed that Florida Road has been closed down following the shooting incident on Florida Road in which two people have been confirmed dead. One of the dead was a “famous rapper”.

South African rapper AKA

AKA was a leader in the South African music industry, having won numerous awards and accolades for his work.

He was an innovator and an inspiration to many, pushing the boundaries of the genre and providing a platform for other South African artists to express themselves. His influence will be felt for years to come.

From humble beginnings, AKA’s rise to success was a testament to his talent, passion, and determination. He will continue to inspire and influence aspiring musicians for generations to come.

At the time of his death, AKA was in a relationship with Nadia Nakai, and he had a child with DJ Zinhle (Kairo). He had also dated Bonang Matheba.
