Police in KwaZulu-Natal say the suspects opened fire on the multi-award winner and his bodyguard while they were leaving a restaurant on Florida Road.
Another individual thought to be AKA’s bodyguard, sustained injuries, while an unidentified person, believed to be an old friend of AKA, was killed.
Police statement on AKA’s shooting
In a later statement, police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that two murder cases were being investigated, and that police have not yet established the motives for the murders.
He confirmed that one of the dead was a popular musician. According to reports, AKA was standing outside of the Wish Restaurant when he was shot by drive-by gunmen.
“I can confirm that two men were killed and one of them is a well-known rapper. Police will not be releasing any names of the victims yet until a full investigation is completed” said Netshiunda, as reported by News24.
Two unknown cars are believed to have opened fire just before 10pm. Speaking to IOL news agency, stunned patrons at a nearby restaurant said AKA had been standing outside Wish when he was gunned down.

At the time of his death, AKA was in a relationship with Nadia Nakai, and he had a child with DJ Zinhle (Kairo). He had also dated Bonang Matheba.
