Ghanaian Singer Baaba J Named Spotify EQUAL Africa Artist for April

Spotify, the music streaming platform, has recognized Baaba J, an emerging Ghanaian singer, as the EQUAL Africa artist for April.

KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Baaba J, a rising Ghanaian singer who incorporates a unique blend of soul, pop, rap, and alté into her music, has been named Spotify EQUAL Africa artist for April.

The EQUAL Africa program aims to showcase and amplify the voices of female artists across the continent, breaking down barriers and making waves in music.

Baaba J’s music, which features lyrics in English, Ga, and pidgin, touches on themes of love, heartache, and the desire to belong. She celebrates individuality and freedom, inspiring others to be themselves through her music.

Spotify’s recognition of Baaba J as the EQUAL Africa artist for April adds to her growing reputation as an exciting and unique artist to watch.

Recognition and Previous Participants

As part of the recognition, Baaba J’s single ‘Outside’ will be featured on the EQUAL Africa playlist. She joins other female African artists, including Nikita Kering‘, Sio, Tiwa Savage, Ayra Starr, Aṣa, and FAVE, who have previously participated in the initiative.

Spotify’s Head of Music for sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, said the streaming platform was committed to amplifying underrepresented voices and breaking down barriers in the music industry.

“We hope that by shining a light on their unique perspectives and experiences, we can inspire a new generation of creators and listeners alike,” she said.

Baaba J describes her music as African, incorporating traditional folk melodies into her sound, and experimenting with various genres, both African and Western, to produce a unique and authentic sound.

She was part of Ghanaian creatives who met US Vice President Kamala Harris during her visit to Ghana last month.

Looking Forward

Baaba J hopes for a time in the near future where there are more avenues and safe spaces for women to record music and begin their music journeys.
