Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Uganda’s Parliament Speaker, Anita Among, handed five new Land Cruisers to former speakers, including Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi and Moses Kigongo. The Parliament spent over Shs 2.5bn on the SUVs, each costing at least Shs 500m. The cars, replaceable every five years, come with expenses covered by taxpayers.
Former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, absent from the handover, received a vehicle. Among mentioned the cars cater to the Administration of Judiciary Act passed in 2020, addressing former speakers not covered by the pension regime.
According to the law, a former Speaker is entitled to an annual housing allowance of Shs300m, a monthly pension of Shs 6.7m, Shs 80.4m annually for medical treatment, and various other benefits, including police guards, personal secretary, furniture, utilities, and domestic servants.
