Josephine Okui Ossiya has etched her name in history as the trailblazing first female president of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU).

KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Josephine Okui Ossiya has made history as she assumes the position of the first female president of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU). This groundbreaking achievement was confirmed during a council meeting, where Ronald Mutumba was also elected as the vice president.

The new council members, carefully selected for their expertise, were announced, marking a significant moment for gender equality and leadership in the accounting profession.

Ossiya’s appointment as the first female president of ICPAU marks a significant step forward in the field of accounting.

The election of Ronald Mutumba as the vice president further reinforces the institute’s commitment to embracing diverse perspectives and experiences. Together, they will lead the ICPAU for the next two years, setting a positive precedent for future leaders.

Alongside Ossiya and Mutumba, the council includes Gloria Tuhaise Wakooba, Prof. Laura Aseru Orobia, James Nathan Nandala Mafabi, Dr. Albert Richards Otete, Timothy David Ediomu, Eng. Steven Serunjogi, Stephen Ojiambo, Edward Akol, and Elizabeth Kateme.

As per the Accountants Act 2013, this council will serve a two-year term from 2023 to 2025.

Democratic Selection Process

The election process for the council members was conducted with transparency and democracy. Utilizing an electronic voting system, ICPAU members actively participated in the process from May 29 to June 14, 2023. This inclusive approach ensured broad representation and fostered a sense of ownership among the institute’s membership.

Appreciating Achievements and Expressing Gratitude

In his farewell address, Constant Othieno Mayende expressed gratitude to the outgoing council for their dedicated service to the institute and the accounting profession in Uganda. He extended his thanks to the ICPAU members for their unwavering support throughout his tenure.

Mayende also congratulated the newly elected council members on their successful election. His term witnessed notable developments, including the introduction of innovative training programs and the expansion of the institute’s regional influence.

“I thank the members of ICPAU for the support rendered to the Institute in various ways. I extend a vote of thanks to the outgoing council for the duty well accomplished, since 2021 and I congratulate the incoming council members upon being elected into office,” he said.

A Landmark for Gender Empowerment

The election of Josephine Okui Ossiya as the first female president of ICPAU represents a significant milestone in advancing gender empowerment within the accounting profession in Uganda.

Mayende acknowledged the importance of Ossiya’s appointment, emphasizing her role as a role model for aspiring female professionals and a staunch advocate for diversity and inclusivity. Ossiya’s presidency will serve as an inspiration and a catalyst for progress, fostering equal opportunities for all professionals in East Africa and beyond.
