Hibiscus tea contains many polyphenols, which are loaded with anti-cancer properties. Various studies have shown that hibiscus extract helps in preventing cancer cells from growing.

It also helps in the treatment of mouth and plasma cell cancer. It also inhibits stomach and prostate cancer cells by 52%, according to research.

It also contains various vitamins and minerals that may be beneficial for your heart.

Side effects of hibiscus tea

In addition to being a delicious beverage, hibiscus tea is also known for its estrogenic properties, which may cause a few unwanted side effects.

While the effects are not well-established, there are some risks to consider. For example, it may interfere with the action of the anti-malaria drug chloroquine and lower its bioavailability.

Furthermore, it may inhibit fertility. Regardless of the benefits, hibiscus should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Although it may not have any ill effects, drinking hibiscus tea regularly may decrease your risk of a stroke or heart disease.

In addition to affecting your body’s hormone levels, hibiscus tea can also lower blood sugar levels. Therefore, if you have diabetes, you should avoid consuming this tea.

If you are pregnant or have kidney stones, consult your doctor before drinking hibiscus tea.

Ways to make hibiscus tea

There are several ways to prepare hibiscus tea. You can simply add the flowers and crushed spices to a large pot of water.

Bring the water to a boil, add the hibiscus flowers, and simmer the mixture for about 10 minutes.

After that, the tea concentrate is ready. You can serve it hot, or chill it and use it to make a delicious iced tea.

In order to add a little spice to your hibiscus tea, add a few mint leaves or slices of fresh ginger. Mint adds a fresh and zesty flavor to the tea, and you can also use dried mint leaves.

You can also add half a teaspoon of fresh ginger or use a half teaspoon of dried ginger. For a more traditional flavor, you can add a little honey or maple syrup.

If you don’t want to use sugar, you can always add a slice of lime.

Using dried hibiscus flowers

To make your own hibiscus tea, you need dried hibiscus flowers.

Hibiscus flower petals are harvested when the flower is fully bloomed, and can be cultivated at home by cutting off the calyx, the bulb-like portion of the plant between the flower and stem.

Make sure to pick plants that are free from pesticides and chemicals. Hibiscus flowers are also known for their distinctive look.

First, clean the petals by soaking them in water. Then, place them in an airtight container. You can use eight to ten petals for a standard pot of tea.

To make tea from hibiscus flowers, you should first rinse them well in clean water and transfer them to a pot to boil.

You can also add other herbs and citrus fruits such as lime juice or honey.

Once the petals are steeped, add them to the boiling water and steep them for about five to six minutes.

After that, strain the tea through a tea filter and add honey or lime juice, if desired.

Making hibiscus tea with ice cubes

If you want a refreshing summer drink, make hibiscus tea with ice. While many recipes call for simple syrup, adding ice will make it refreshing.

Try adding a few mint leaves to the pitcher before serving. You can also garnish it with a wedge of lime and a hibiscus flower. Serve hot or cold. It’s great either way.

Hibiscus tea is packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, and it’s easy to make. To enjoy the health benefits, use frozen or fresh flowers.

If you’re not able to find fresh hibiscus flowers, try using high-quality bottled lime juice. Lemon juice is another healthy alternative, but it will affect the color of your tea.

Make sure to steep your tea for about 15 minutes before serving it, and you’ll get a delicious treat.
