Makerere University Utilizes 5G Network to Monitor Air Quality in Kampala

Makerere University’s College of Computing and Information Science uses 5G to monitor Kampala’s air quality, collaborating with China’s Chongqing College of Electronic Engineering and Huawei.

KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Makerere University is using 5G for monitoring Kampala’s air quality. This technology is implemented in collaboration with Chongqing College of Electronic Engineering in China and Huawei.

High-speed wireless technology aids air quality monitoring.

The College of Engineering Design Art and Technology is deploying robots for air quality monitoring and weather forecasting. In biotechnology, the College of Health Sciences conducts operations with 5G, including applications in Mulago Hospital.

Prof Tonny Oyana dismissed health concerns regarding 5G, emphasizing its role in delivering high-speed internet services. The university conducted 70% of lectures online using this technology.

“After five hours of concentration, a human being loses attention. ..Makerere University College of Engineering Design Art and Technology is using robots to monitor air quality in Kampala and also for forecasting the weather,” Prof Oyana said.

“In Biotechnology, the College of Health Sciences can now conduct operations using 5G. Mulago hospital is also trying out robotics,” he added

“I have also read somewhere that someone is already using the technology to monitor his cattle farm in Mbarara when he is in Kampala,”.

Chongqing College of Electronic Engineering and other Chinese institutions partnered with Ugandan universities for skills transfer in advanced science and technology in July.

Makerere University is forming a faculty team for surveys and training, and 72 international students have joined the China-Africa-Uganda-ICT College to enhance IT professional training.
