Mbarara, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — President Yoweri Museveni expressed his condolences for the passing of Maitland Lawrence Rukaari, the father of Mbarara North MP Robert Mwesigwa Rukaari. Maitland Rukaari, a prominent farmer and businessman in Ankole sub-region, passed away at the age of 89 due to diabetes. The President, who was represented at the burial ceremony by Minister Bright Rwamirama, extended his sympathies to the bereaved family and acknowledged their contributions to the liberation struggle and the development of Mbarara.

Museveni shared that Maitland Rukaari was his maternal cousin’s brother, highlighting the family connection. He expressed his belief that Rukaari could have lived longer if he had been informed about his ailments earlier. He also contributed UGX 10 million towards the funeral expenses.

Other political figures, including Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, Justice Minister Norbert Mao, and Richard Todwong, the Secretary-General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, paid tribute to Maitland Rukaari’s life and contributions. Rukaari is remembered for his role in shaping the future of his family and the nation, having raised and educated children who have become influential leaders in various capacities. He was described as a man who touched many lives and was loved by all who knew him. Maitland Rukaari had seven children with his first wife, Evas, who passed away in 2002, and he later married Jane Rukaari.
