The proclamation was confirmed by Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens during a press conference, highlighting Davido’s profound impact on the local entertainment scene.
The designation of ‘Davido Day’ comes on the heels of the artist’s inaugural A.W.A.Y (Are We African Yet?) Music Festival, a momentous event held at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. The festival aimed to celebrate African music and culture in the diaspora, fostering collaborations among creatives.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the city, Mayor Dickens commended Davido’s multifaceted contributions as a singer, songwriter, producer, business leader, philanthropist, and community advocate. The mayor acknowledged Davido’s global influence, describing him as a musical icon who has captivated audiences worldwide.
The Atlanta City Council further solidified the recognition by proclaiming November 18, 2023, as ‘Davido Day’ in the city. Simultaneously, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners extended an additional honor, designating November 21 as ‘Davido Appreciation Day’ in Fulton County, Georgia.
Davido, born David Adedeji Adeleke, stands as a pivotal figure in the Afrobeats genre and is recognized as one of Nigeria’s most successful musicians in the digital era. His notable albums include Omo Baba Olowo (2012) and A Good Time (2019), featuring global hits such as ‘Aye,’ ‘If,’ and ‘Fall.’
This recent accolade adds to Davido’s momentum, following three Grammy nominations at the upcoming 66th Grammys on February 5. Fueled by his latest album, Timeless, the nominations include Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Performance, and Best Global Music Album.
