Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Henry K. Magumba Kyemba, aged 86, will receive an official burial at his ancestral home in Bugembe town, Jinja District on October 26. He passed away due to diabetes-related complications on October 19 at URO CARE Hospital in Kampala.
According to a statement by Government Spokesperson Mr. Ofwono Opondo on October 21, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed that Henry K. Magumba Kyemba be granted an official burial, as per Article 99 of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda. An official funeral is reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to the country, and the government covers all the expenses.
A preliminary program for the burial has been established, with a National Organizing Committee chaired by Minister for Presidency Hon. Milly Babirye Babalanda and representatives from the family. The burial is scheduled for 4 pm on Thursday next week.
The tentative program includes the following:
- Monday, October 23: The body will leave the funeral home for a 10 am church service at Namirembe Cathedral in Kampala, followed by transportation to his home in Port Bell, Luzira at 2 pm.
- Tuesday: The body will be at parliament from 10 am to 1 pm for parliamentarians to pay their respects before being taken to a funeral home in Ntinda.
- Wednesday: A Joint Local Council Session will be held at the City Hall in Jinja at 10 am, and the body will then be transported to his ancestral home in Bugembe at 3 pm.
- Thursday: A church service at Bugembe Cathedral will precede the final resting place at 4 pm.
Henry K. Magumba Kyemba was a prominent Rotarian and political leader who held significant positions in post-independence Uganda.
