Nairobi, Kenya | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Kelvin Kiptum, the newly crowned world marathon record holder, has been nominated for the Male Athlete of the Year Award. Kiptum made headlines by smashing the men’s marathon world record at the Chicago Marathon, setting a new time of 2:00:35 and surpassing the previous record held by Eliud Kipchoge.

The 23-year-old athlete also achieved victory in the London Marathon in April, setting a new course record of 2:01:25. Kiptum’s remarkable achievements have earned him a spot on the shortlist, representing Kenya.

However, he faces tough competition from other outstanding track and field stars of 2023, including pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis of Sweden and Noah Lyles of the USA. The list also includes athletes such as Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco, Neeraj Chopra of India, and Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway, among others.

The finalists will be determined through a three-way voting process. The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family will cast their votes via email, while fans can vote online through World Athletics’ social media platforms. The voting process involves a combination of votes from the council, the athletics family, and the public, each accounting for a specific percentage.

Voting for the World Athletes of the Year Award closes at midnight on October 28. The final list of five male and five female finalists will be announced by World Athletics on November 13-14, and the winners will be revealed on December 11 through World Athletics’ social media platforms.
