KAMPALA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — NBC will broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas the 2022 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 15, which is the first time since 2019 that the awards will take place there. Billboard Music Awards 2022’s top contender is The Weeknd.
- There are 17 categories in which The Weeknd is a finalist, including top male artist, top hot 100 artist, and his collaboration with Ariana Grande “Save Your Tears (Remix).”
- The Grammy-winning artist Doja Cat is the leading female finalist with 14 nominations, including top artist, top female artist and top Hot 100 artist.
- Her Grammy-winning album Planet Her, featuring SZA, is nominated for two awards while her hit “Kiss Me More,” featuring SZA, is up for top Hot 100 song and most collaborative song, as well as in the new top viral song category.
Among the 17 categories in which The Weeknd has been nominated are top artist, top male artist, and top Hot 100 artist. The Weeknd’s collaboration with Ariana Grande, “Save Your Tears (Remix),” is up for six awards.
With 14 nominations, Doja Cat is the leading female finalist, including top artist, top female artist, top Hot 100 artist, and top viral artist. Her Grammy-winning smash hit “Kiss Me More” is among the finalists for top Hot 100 song and top collaboration, as well as in the new category of top viral.
The trio of Justin Bieber, Ye, also known as Kanye West, and Olivia Rodrigo has each been nominated for 13 awards. Justin Bieber ranks third in the record books as the most decorated artist in BBMA history, trailing only Drake (29 wins) and Taylor Swift (25).
Rapper Drake is a finalist 11 times and is up for eleven awards, including top artist, top male artist, and top Billboard 200 artist. He is also up for the Billboard 200 album award for Certified Lover Boy.
With nine nominations each, Dua Lipa and Ed Sheeran follow, while The Kid LAROI has eight. BTS, Giveon and Swift are all finalists seven times; BTS is the top group or duo this year.
This year, Swift is a finalist twice in the top country album category for Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version), making her the most decorated female artist of all time at the Billboard Music Awards.
Swift is a finalist for the eighth time in a row, while Drake is a finalist for the sixth time, making him the no. 2 all-time in that category.
This year, The Weeknd is a finalist for the fourth time, putting him in a tie with Bieber and Rihanna for third place all-time. Doja Cat and Rodrigo are each finalists for the first time.
Billboard Music Awards 2022 will feature five new categories, four based on Billboard’s authoritative global charts and one measuring viral songs. At present, there are 62 categories in total.
Billboard’s global charts are ranked according to song streams and download sales both internationally and excluding the United States. The new categories are top Billboard Global 200 artists, top Billboard Global Excl USA artists, top Billboard Global 200 songs, and top Billboard Global Excl USA songs.
Ed Sheeran is a finalist as an artist and for his smash single “Bad Habits.”
The award criteria are based on tracking from March 26, 2021, through March 17, 2022. This corresponds to Billboard chart dates from April 10, 2021, through March 26, 2022.
For more than 30 years, the Billboard Music Awards have been honoring music’s greatest achievements. Unlike other music award shows, finalists are determined by performances on Billboard charts. Since 1940, the Billboard charts have been the only reliable indicator of the popularity of artists, songs, and albums.
The 2022 Billboard Music Awards will be broadcast live coast-to-coast on NBC on Sunday, May 15 and streamed live on Peacock. The host has not been announced; last year’s host was Nick Jonas.
Production of the 2022 Billboard Music Awards is handled by MRC Live & Alternative, and Robert Deaton is the executive producer.
