Mrs. Jane Dolapo Balogun, the mother of Nigerian singer Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, widely known as Wizkid, has died at around 1:30 am on Friday.
NAIROBI, KENYA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Mrs. Jane Dolapo Balogun, the mother of Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Wizkid (Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun), has passed away.
Wizkid’s manager, Sunday Are, confirmed her passing to journalists, stating, “Yes, she died this morning, at about 1.30 am.”
Wizkid had often praised his mother for her support in his music career and expressed his deep affection for her through songs like ‘Mummy Mi,’ ‘Joy,’ and ‘Jaiye Jaiye.’ He even got a tattoo on his hand with the name ‘Morayo’ in her honor.
In July 2019, Wizkid celebrated her on her birthday with a heartfelt Instagram post, calling her his backbone and expressing his love and willingness to do anything for her, despite his usual tendency to avoid such public displays.
“My backbone, prayer warrior, my life! I love you. I’ll do anything for you. I will do everything for you. (I wish you) long life.”, Wizkid posted on Instagram.
Wizkid’s late mother also frequently spoke about her love for him in interviews, expressing her gratitude to God for her son and her belief in his continued protection.
“I am so glad that he is my son and I’m his mother. I give God all the glory. God has kept him for us and He will continue to (do so).”, she spoke to Daily Post in April 2014.
“Right from when he was a kid, I called him ‘IB-boy’, which is a short form of his name, Ibrahim.”, she added.
Since the news of her passing surfaced, fans have taken to social media platforms, including X (Twitter), to offer condolences to the singer and his family.
Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Gregory Obi, expressed his condolences on Twitter, extending sympathy and prayers to Wizkid and his family.
On behalf of the OBIdient family, I sincerely commiserate with Mr Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, (Wizkid), who reportedly lost his beloved mother. The death of a loved one is a very painful experience, more so a beloved mother.
