KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Swangz Avenue singer and songwriter Priscilla Zawedde, known as Azawi, is set to release her second music album, titled ‘Sankofa,’ after a two-year hiatus.
Azawi announced the album’s name and release date on social media, with ‘Sankofa’ dropping on October 9th.
The album’s title, ‘Sankofa,’ is derived from the Akan tribe in Ghana and translates to “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” It reflects the album’s theme of reflecting on the past to move forward.
‘Sankofa’ will feature over 14 carefully crafted tracks, promising a rich musical experience blending melodies and storytelling.
Azawi has collaborated with international musicians, composers, and producers to create a diverse and captivating album.
The release of ‘Sankofa’ follows Azawi’s successful debut album, ‘African Music,’ released on October 9, 2021, which opened doors for her across the continent and globally.
‘African Music’ included hit songs like “My Year,” “Party Mood,” “Ache For You,” “Kido,” “Majje,” and “African Music,” among others, and accumulated one million streams in less than a month on various streaming platforms.
Azawi’s track “Ten Over Ten” has been a chart-topper, solidifying her position in the music industry and paving the way for her upcoming album, ‘Sankofa,’ which is set to be a musical journey into memories and rhythms of life.
The album’s release date, October 9th, holds significance in Uganda as Independence Day. Azawi plans an exclusive private listening party to celebrate the album’s launch.
