Atlanta, United States | NOW THEN DIGITAL — The 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards revealed its winners during the recently aired ceremony, celebrating five decades of hip hop culture. Among the notable recipients was Black Sherif, a Ghanaian musician, who clinched the prestigious Best International Flow Award. This victory marked a significant achievement for Africa in the awards, triumphing over talented artists like Sampa the Great from Zambia, the late AKA from South Africa, and K.O, also from South Africa.
In his acceptance speech, Black Sherif, renowned for his chart-topping debut album “The Villain I Never Was” (2022), expressed gratitude for his rapid ascent to international fame in just four years. He extended a warm invitation to the diaspora, encouraging them to rediscover their roots in Africa and emphasizing their regal heritage with a heartfelt, “Welcome back home.”
Interestingly, Kendrick Lamar, a prominent rapper, emerged as the standout winner of the night, securing four major awards at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards. Despite being Africa’s leading nominee, Burna Boy from Nigeria did not manage to secure an award.
