Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Susan Nsibirwa has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Monitor Publications Limited (MPL), making her the first female managing director of Nation Media Group (NMG-U) Uganda, according to an announcement by group CEO Stephen Gitagama on Tuesday.

Effective from January 2, 2024, Nsibirwa takes over from Tony Glencross amidst a global media landscape undergoing radical changes, including those at NMG-U.

Susan Nsibirwa Appointed

Gitagama highlighted Nsibirwa’s role in leading MPL, as well as East African and Africa Broadcasting Limited (ABUL), which operates NTV Uganda and Spark TV. Her responsibilities include steering these entities to achieve long-term strategies, business plans, and annual performance targets for maximum shareholder value.

At the time of her appointment, Nsibirwa was involved in MPL’s strategy and audit, risk, and compliance board committees. She also served as the board chair at the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME). With over 25 years of experience in marketing and communications, including 15 years in senior executive roles, Nsibirwa brings a wealth of expertise to her new position.

Tony Glencross, departing the group on December 22, 2023, after a notable tenure, initiated a digital and cultural transformation journey across Uganda’s legacy media. Reflecting on his achievements, Glencross pointed to the bold decision to introduce a paywall for digital content in October 2023, emphasizing the belief in sustaining quality journalism to significantly impact the business’s fortunes.

Having steered NMG-U through the pandemic with smooth relations with the government, Glencross expressed confidence in the organization’s continued success and ongoing achievements.

Nation Media Group (NMG) stands as the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa, operating in print, broadcast, and digital media. The conglomerate, with unparalleled audiences in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, includes NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Daily Monitor, The East African, Enyanda, KFM, Dembe FM, and Nation Courier, among others.
