Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Ghanaian-American singer Ama Serwah Genfi, known as Amaarae, has celebrated her sophomore album Fountain Baby surpassing 1 billion global streams.
She announced this milestone on X, calling it “the perfect way to end an already incredible week.” Reflecting on her journey, Amaarae noted the stark contrast from her early days recording in her Accra bedroom just four years ago.
“Thank you to the fans—you made this happen. Thanks for streaming, buying concert tickets, merch… Gratitude to my management, music, and creative teams, and to Interscope Records and CEO John Janick for believing in me!”
Released in June 2023, Fountain Baby follows Amaarae’s 2020 album The Angel You Don’t Know, featuring singles like “Co-Star” and “Reckless & Sweet.” The album delves into themes of female empowerment, gender norms, and sexuality, merging experimental pop with mainstream Afrobeats.
“By blending her West African heritage with a global perspective, Amaarae crafts a body of work transcending genre and regional boundaries, solidifying her role as a pivotal figure in the future of music,” a statement read.
Amaarae described the project as exuding “an unstoppable surge of sex appeal, abundant blessings, and undeniable swag,” calling it a “vibrant declaration to the world that I am a truly blessed child of God.”
Amaarae’s billion-stream milestone coincides with the release of Roses Are Red, Tears Are Blue – A Fountain Baby Extended Play. The six-track EP, featuring Naomi Sharon and 6lack, continues the pop, R&B, and Afrobeats fusion of its predecessor.
In an interview with Music In Africa last year, Amaarae emphasized her mission to represent Africa globally. Her remix of “Sad Girlz Luv Money” featuring Kali Uchis & Moliy earned a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, with over a million units sold.
“I think there are many global sounds. But at the core, the drums and bass are African. I travel extensively, exploring new places to share with my people, but ultimately, my identity as an African is paramount,” Amaarae stated.
Amaarae will join US rapper Childish Gambino as a special guest on his world tour supporting his new album Atavista. The 57-date tour begins on 11 August in Oklahoma City, spans major North American cities until 3 October, moves to Europe from 31 October to 5 December, and concludes in Oceania in early 2025, visiting Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, ending on 11 February.
