Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Airtel Money Uganda has collaborated with AAR Health Services and Bluewave to introduce “Ddwaliro Care,“ a low-cost comprehensive health insurance product tailored to meet the healthcare needs of individuals and families in Uganda. The initiative aims to make health insurance more accessible and affordable in a country where less than 1% of the population has health insurance coverage due to issues of accessibility and high costs of healthcare.

Ddwaliro Care offers three options, each with varying coverage and premiums:

  1. Ddwaliro Mini: Provides customers with an inpatient limit of UGX 1.5 million and a funeral benefit of UGX 1 million per year for themselves or their dependents, up to a maximum of six. Premiums range from UGX 10,000 for an individual to UGX 70,000 for seven dependents per month.
  2. Ddwaliro Midi: Offers customers an inpatient limit of UGX 3 million and a funeral benefit of UGX 1.5 million per year for themselves or their dependents, up to a maximum of six. Premiums range from UGX 14,000 for an individual to UGX 88,000 for seven dependents per month.
  3. Ddwaliro Biggie: Provides customers with a limit of UGX 5 million and a funeral benefit of UGX 2 million per year for themselves or their dependents, up to a maximum of six. Monthly premiums range from UGX 18,000 for an individual to UGX 108,000 for seven dependents.

Airtel Money customers can easily access cashless inpatient coverage for themselves and their families by dialing 1857*6# on the Airtel network. This initiative is expected to take advantage of Uganda’s high mobile phone penetration and extend insurance benefits to millions of individuals who have been excluded from such services due to accessibility and affordability challenges.

The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) commended the collaboration between Airtel Money, AAR Health Services, and Bluewave, emphasizing that Ddwaliro Care aims to make insurance more accessible and relevant to the broader population. The product has been designed to cover individuals of all generations, from birth (for full-term babies) to 65 years, with the possibility of extending coverage beyond 65 years through review. Additionally, children above 18 years but below 24 years can be included in their parents’ cover as long as they are still attending school.

The partnership between Airtel Money, AAR Health Services, and Bluewave aims to address the challenges of healthcare accessibility and affordability in Uganda by providing a cost-friendly and flexible health insurance solution for a wider population. The ability to purchase coverage for third parties, such as domestic workers or relatives, further enhances its inclusivity.
