Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — On February 15, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) released the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results. The results showed an increase in candidates scoring Division 1, with 17.9% achieving this compared to 13.5% the previous year. Out of 364,469 candidates who registered, 95.9% can progress to the next level, indicating a drop in failures.

In 2023, 361,695 candidates appeared for the examination, with females outperforming males in English but males performing better in other subjects like History, Geography, Sciences, and Commerce. Concerns persist over low performance in Physics and Chemistry, although there was an improvement in Biology.

These are the last results under the old curriculum, as the UCE will follow the New Lower Secondary curriculum from October 2024. Dan Odongo, Executive Director of UNEB, noted that 346,816 candidates are eligible to advance to the next educational level.

Furthermore, 23.7% passed in Division Two, 23.1% in Division Three, and 31.2% in Division Four. While there were improvements in English, Religious Education, Mathematics, and Biology, declines were observed in History, Agriculture, and Physics.

Regarding scientific subjects, there’s still concern over poor performance, although there was a slight improvement in Biology. Challenges in handling scientific apparatus, making observations, and mathematical skills persist.

Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Minister of Education and Sports, expressed satisfaction with the improvement in Biology performance, emphasizing collaborative efforts. However, she highlighted the need for sustainability and understanding factors contributing to positive trends for further enhancement.

I am pleased to announce the release of the 2023 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) Examination Results. This marks the second of three milestones that signify the completion of cycle examinations in the basic and secondary education levels of our education system.
