KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Rwanda ranks first among its income group before Madagascar and Ethiopia and occupies the ninth position among sub-Saharan African countries according to the latest Global Innovation Index.

- Around 132 economies are assessed on their innovation performance by the Global Innovation Index, which highlights both their strengths and weaknesses.
- Its 2022 Global Innovation Index tracks innovation trends worldwide. The best-ranked African nations are Mauritius, South Africa and Morocco, respectively ranked 45th, 61st and 67th.
- Kenya, Rwanda and Mozambique lead the sub-Saharan African innovators, while Switzerland, the United States and Sweden lead the global innovators.
A global innovation index, the GII, measures innovation trends worldwide in 2022. The index evaluates the innovation performance of around 132 economies, highlighting both their strengths and weaknesses.
Among the African nations with the best rankings, Mauritius, South Africa and Morocco come in at 45th, 61st and 67th, respectively.
The report commends Rwanda’s policies for doing business as well as its scientific and technical articles, which the report lists as being its strengths. Mauritania, Burundi, and Guinea are among the least innovative African economies.
8 out of the 26 top innovators are from Sub-Saharan Africa, with Kenya, Rwanda, and Mozambique leading the way. Switzerland, the United States, and Sweden head up the Global Innovation Index.
