Kisoro, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Former Inspector General of Police, Gen (Rtd) Kale Kayihura, announced that he will not pursue elective politics but will focus on farming after retiring from the army. He shared this decision at a homecoming event in Kisoro Municipality, organized to celebrate his retirement from the army.
Speculations had circulated that Gen Kayihura might seek the Bufumbira East parliamentary seat in Kisoro District. However, he dismissed these rumors, expressing his apprehension about elective politics at any level, even at the LC1 post.
“I am not interested in elective politics as some people had started speculating that I was eyeing the Bufumbira East parliamentary seat in Kisoro District,” Kayihura said.
He added: ”I fear elective politics; even if it is an LC1 post, I fear it. I have a lot of things to do in my retirement, especially things to do with farming,”.
Gen Kayihura retired from the army following his acquittal of criminal cases related to illegal repatriation of Rwandan refugees and failure to protect war materials in the court martial. He emphasized that the cases against him were fabricated, a sentiment echoed during the weekend event.
He appreciated President Museveni’s thorough investigations that revealed the truth and vindicated him. Gen Kayihura stressed that he was not pardoned but rather cleared of any wrongdoing.
He expressed gratitude to various individuals who supported him during the trial, including Kisoro District chairperson Abel Bizimana, Gen Andrew Gutti, Gen Wilson Mbadi, Gen David Muhoozi, Maj Gen James Mugira, Maj Gen Sam Kavuma, and his legal team. He also acknowledged the unwavering support of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Gen Salim Saleh Akandwanaho, and his wife Jovia.
Gen Kayihura emphasized the importance of love and unity in promoting humanity, referring to the Bible’s teachings on love for God and one’s neighbor. He acknowledged the support of his family during challenging times and reaffirmed his pride as a retired military officer.
The homecoming event included ecumenical prayers led by religious leaders from different denominations, emphasizing gratitude for Gen Kayihura’s freedom and unity among people. Former political representatives encouraged Gen Kayihura to engage in promoting development and urged him to advocate for the fulfillment of presidential pledges for the region.
