The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has chosen local musician Sadat Mukiibi, better known as Kalifah Aganaga, as their candidate for the Kawempe North MP by-election set for March 13.

FDC unveiled Aganaga on Wednesday at their Najjanankumbi headquarters in Kampala. Party president Patrick Amuriat Oboi led the announcement, expressing confidence in their pick.

“For those who think Kawempe North belongs to a particular party, think again. This is an open race, and we are bringing in a young, energetic leader to reclaim the seat for FDC,” Amuriat said.

Aganaga, known for his music career, called on fellow artists to rally behind him, emphasizing the need for more musicians in Parliament to push for copyright laws.

“Dear fellow musicians and artistes, laws are made in Parliament and for us to push for the copyright law we must have a number of musicians in Parliament. Therefore, I call upon all musicians and artistes to support and rally behind me. I promise you to front the copyright law,” he said.

This announcement comes as the National Unity Platform (NUP) prepares to select its own flagbearer. At least 10 candidates have shown interest in carrying the NUP ticket. They will face off in a debate on February 7, with the final selection set for February 11.

Some of the NUP hopefuls include Umar Magala, Muhammad Lusswa Luwemba, Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, Mathias Mulumba, Moses Nsereko, Salim Sserunkuuma, and Fredrick Katika. Others in the running are Charles Rubagumya, Kenneth Ssekungu, and Saul Kulya Zziwa.

Meanwhile, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has fronted Faridah Nambi for the seat, despite Kawempe North being a longtime opposition stronghold.

Other candidates include Ismail Musiitwa from the People’s Progressive Party, Hanifah Karadi and Muhamood Mutazindwa as independents, while the Democratic Party (DP) has yet to announce its pick.
