At the 2023 BRIT Awards, two Afrobeats stars, Burna Boy and Fireboy DML, have been nominated. The winners will be announced on Saturday, 11 February, at the O2 Arena in London.
KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Nigerian African giant Burna Boy and Fireboy DML have been nominated for the 2023 BRIT Awards (BRITs) in the UK. The BRIT Awards will be held at the O2 Arena in London on the 11th of February.
- The 2023 Brit Awards feature more than 50 nominations, including global stars Stormzy and Taylor Swift alongside newcomers such as Central Cee and Mimi Webb.
- This is Burna Boy’s third nomination for the British Phonographic Industry’s annual celebration of British music. The BRITs were first presented in 1977 and are recognized as the biggest night in British music.
- In the category of ‘International Song of the Year’, Nigerian artist Fireboy DML received a nomination for his song “Peru”, which features English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.
In 1977, the British Phonographic Industry of Great Britain launched the BRITs, which are now the most prestigious awards presented in the industry. Burna Boy has now been nominated for the BRITs three times.
Burna Boy is competing alongside Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Lizzo and Taylor Swift for the BRIT Awards 2023 ‘International Artist of the Year’ Award.
Another Nigerian, Fireboy DML, was nominated for a BRIT award in the category ‘International Song of the Year’ with his song Peru, which features English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.
The British-Ghanaian rapper Stormzy, on the other hand, received three nominations, including Album of the Year, British Artist of the Year and Best Hip-Hop/Grime/Rap Album.
Harry Styles and Wet Leg, both of whom scored four nominations, are among this year’s top nominees. For the second consecutive year, comedian Mo Gilligan will host the BRIT Awards in 2023.
