The Electoral Commission has set Thursday, July 6, 2023, as the date for the Oyam County North by-election following the unfortunate passing of its MP, Colonel (rtd) Charles Okello-Engola.
KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — The Electoral Commission has announced that the Oyam County North by-election will take place on Thursday, July 6, 2023.
This election is being held to replace the late MP Colonel (rtd) Charles Okello-Engola, who tragically lost his life when he was shot by his UPDF bodyguard Pte Wilson Sabiiti on May 2 at his home in Kyanja, Kampala.
“The Commission has appointed Monday 22nd May 2023 as the cut-off date for applying for registration as a voter and for transfer of voting location in Oyam County North. The registration and transfer of voters from one polling station to another within Oyam North will not take place after Monday 22nd May 2023,” says Paul Bukenya, EC spokesperson in a statement.
Registration and Transfer of Voters
To ensure a fair and accurate electoral process, the Electoral Commission has set important deadlines for voter registration and transfer of voting location.
The cut-off date for applying for registration as a voter and transferring voting location in Oyam County North is Monday, May 22, 2023. After this date, no further registration or transfer will be allowed within the constituency, as stated by Paul Bukenya, the EC spokesperson.
Update of National Voters’ Register
The update of the National Voters’ Register will take place from Thursday, May 18, to Monday, May 22. This process will be conducted at update stations located in each of the thirty-nine (39) parishes and wards in Oyam County North Constituency.
Display of Voters’ Register
Starting from Tuesday, May 30, to Thursday, June 8, the Voters’ Register will be displayed at all 167 polling stations for a period of ten days. This will provide an opportunity for voters to review the register and ensure their information is accurate.
Display of Parish Tribunal Recommendations
From Thursday, June 8, to Tuesday, June 13, the Parish/Ward Headquarters will conduct the display of Parish Tribunal Recommendations. This process will involve the review of recommendations for deletion from or inclusion on the Voters’ Register.
Nomination of Candidates and Campaign Period
The nomination of candidates will be conducted on Monday, June 19, and Tuesday, June 20, at the Office of the District Returning Officer in Oyam. Following the nomination, candidates will embark on a campaign period lasting 13 days, from Thursday, June 22, to Tuesday, July 4.
Polling and Tallying of Results
The culminating event of the by-election will be the polling and tallying of results, which will take place on Thursday, July 6. This is the day when voters will have the opportunity to cast their votes and determine the new representative for Oyam County North.
As the by-election draws near, the Electoral Commission urges eligible voters to stay informed and actively participate in this democratic process. It is an opportunity for the constituents of Oyam County North to have their voices heard and elect a new representative who will serve their interests and aspirations.
