KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Ugandan businessman Apollo Nyegamehe, popularly known as Aponye, has tragically lost his life in a road accident. The incident occurred when the vehicle he was traveling in collided with a stationary truck along the Mbarara-Kabale highway near Itojo Hospital in Ntungamo district.
The Uganda Police has released a statement regarding this fatal incident, providing preliminary details of the accident.
The Accident and Investigation Findings
In an official statement shared on Twitter, SP Kasasira Samson, Public Relations Officer of Rwizi Region Police, conveyed the following information: The accident took place at approximately 9:00 PM yesterday along the Ntungamo-Mbarara Road in Itojo. It involved two vehicles, a Land Cruiser with registration number UBF 300Z and a FUSO truck registered as UAZ 767D.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the Land Cruiser, heading towards Kabale, collided with the parked FUSO truck. The FUSO truck had experienced a mechanical problem and was stationary on the side of the road in Itojo.
Unfortunately, Mr. Apollo Nyegamehe lost his life in the accident. His body has been transferred to the mortuary at Itojo Hospital. Two injured individuals from the Land Cruiser were promptly transported to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for immediate medical attention.
The police express their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, and their thoughts are with them during this challenging period. They also extend their wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured parties. As the investigation progresses, further updates will be provided to the public.

Details of the Incident
Aponye, who also served as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Chairman for Rukiga District, met with this unfortunate accident on Thursday in Ntungamo district.
The incident occurred at 9:00 PM in Itojo, as he was traveling from Kampala to Rukiga district to attend a burial ceremony for Peter Tumwijukye, a resident of Kyogo parish in Kamwezi sub-county.
According to Zadock Kamusiime, the Rukiga Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Aponye was traveling in a Toyota Land Cruiser V8R with registration number UBF 300Z when it collided with a parked Fuso truck on the side of the road.
Aponye lost his life on the spot, while the driver, identified only as Brian, and two other occupants of the vehicle are currently admitted at the facility in critical condition.
Business Ventures and Philanthropy
Aponye owned a variety of businesses under the company name Aponye Uganda Limited, including real estate, supermarkets, transit transport, and produce, among others. Notable establishments associated with his name include Aponye City Mall, Mega Standard Supermarket, and Aponye Mall in Ntinda.
During the Covid-19-induced lockdown in 2020, Aponye gained significant recognition for supplying beans and maize flour to the government, which were then distributed to vulnerable Ugandans affected by the containment measures announced by President Museveni.
Apart from his business ventures, Aponye was known for his philanthropic contributions. He purchased a portrait of President Museveni for 10 million UGX ($2,700) in 2010 as part of a fundraising drive for Rushoroza Cathedral in Kabale.
Furthermore, his company played a role in supplying maize flour to United Nations agencies and refugee camps, showcasing his dedication to addressing humanitarian needs.
Legacy and the Aponye Net Worth
Apollo Nyegamehe’s net worth was estimated to be over $20 million according to a 2009 New Vision article. His significant wealth was primarily generated from ventures in grain trading, real estate, logistics, and hospitality.
