On Sunday, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his grief over the loss of former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Bola Ajibola.

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his condolences following the passing of former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Bola Ajibola. Ajibola, who was also a former Judge of the International Court of Justice in Hague, Netherlands, died at the age of 89 on Saturday night.

  • The Prince’s contributions to the nation’s legal landscape were noteworthy, and his loss is deeply felt. President Buhari joined Nigerians in mourning the late legal luminary, acknowledging his exceptional service to the country and offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
  • President Buhari also highlighted Ajibola’s sterling career, which saw him rise to the pinnacle of the legal profession and serve with distinction at the International Court of Justice in The Hague from 1991 to 1994. Ajibola also served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2002.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Femi Adesina, President Buhari acknowledged Ajibola’s contributions to the development of Nigeria’s legal system, particularly during a critical period in the nation’s history when he served as Attorney General and Minister for Justice.

The President also praised Ajibola’s patriotism, integrity, and passion for service and humanity, describing him as an outstanding lawyer and eminent jurist who used his knowledge and intellect to advocate for justice, fairness, and equity within and outside Nigeria.

“His contributions to the development of our legal system cannot be overstated, serving as the Attorney General and Minister for Justice at a critical period in the nation’s history,” the President said.

“His patriotic inclinations, integrity, and passion for service and advancement of humanity will continue to resonate after him.”

President Buhari commiserated with the legal community in Nigeria and worldwide and noted that Ajibola took his brilliance in law practice to the International Court of Justice in Hague, where he served with merit between 1991 and 1994.

Additionally, he was also the Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, from 1999 to 2002.
