Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s head of music for sub-Saharan Africa, expressed her delight at having Teni as the EQUAL Africa programme ambassador for August.
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Swedish audio streaming and media services provider Spotify has named Nigerian singer Teni as its EQUAL Africa artist for August.
This move is part of Spotify’s ongoing commitment to diversity and equality in the music industry, focusing on talented female artists from diverse backgrounds.
Teni joins the ranks of other notable female African acts in the initiative, such as Ayra Starr, Aṣa, Yemi Alade, Baaba J, Gyakie, Somi, DBN Gogo, and Soraia Ramos. Launched in April 2021, the initiative features beneficiaries on Times Square billboards in New York, with their songs leading the Equal Africa and Equal Global playlists.
Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s head of music for sub-Saharan Africa, expressed delight in having Teni as the EQUAL Africa programme ambassador, highlighting Teni’s unique music, dedication, and growing fandom as an inspiration in the African music scene.
“We are delighted to have Teni as our EQUAL Africa programme ambassador for August. The uniqueness of her music, dedication to her craft and growing fandom truly spotlight her as an inspiration in the African music scene. Celebrating Teni and her musical journey definitely aligns with our commitment to recognising the unique experiences of female artists through their music from all corners of the continent.”, Phiona Okumu, said.
Teni herself welcomed the announcement, crediting initiatives like EQUAL for spotlighting female talents and pushing for progress.
She pledged to continue using her platform to create space for more female talents to thrive.
“To be honest, it’s not easy, but thanks to initiatives like the EQUAL programme which helps to spotlight more female talents, we can make more progress. I’ll keep using my platform to push and make space for opportunities like these to help more female talents to thrive.”, Teni said.
Teni, known for blending Afrobeats, pop, and R&B, gained mainstream attention in 2017 with ‘Fargin’ and has since built an impressive catalog with popular tracks like ‘Wait’, ‘Askamaya’, ‘Billionaire’, and ‘For You’. Her recent release, ‘No Days Off’, anticipates a new album set for release this fall.
