Uganda Cranes coach Milutin Micho Sredojevic has been dismissed from his position following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Uganda Cranes coach Milutin Micho Sredojevic has been sacked following the team’s failure to secure qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Third-Place Finish Spells the End

In the qualification campaign, Uganda Cranes finished third in their group, with only the top two teams, Algeria and Tanzania, earning their ticket to Ivory Coast for AFCON 2023.

On Thursday, September 14, 2023, both Fufa (Federation of Uganda Football Associations) and Mr. Milutin Sredojevic reached a mutual agreement to terminate their existing employment contract.

Fufa Acknowledges Efforts

In a statement, Fufa expressed their appreciation for Mr. Milutin’s dedication and hard work during his tenure as the head coach of Uganda Cranes.

The six-line-long statement, which included the title and the federation motto, marked the end of Milutin Sredojevic’s reign. Notably, his tenure had become increasingly unpopular with the wider football public.

“Today, Thursday, September 14, 2023, Fufa and Mr. Milutin Sredojevic agreed to mutually end the existing employment contract between the two parties,”. Fufa appreciates all efforts and commitment by Mr. Milutin during his period as head coach of Uganda Cranes.” the federation wrote.

Transition Period Ends in Disappointment

Milutin Sredojevic took over as head coach in 2021, following Uganda’s failure to qualify for the AFCON in Cameroon. He had replaced interim coach Abdallah Mubiru, who, in turn, had taken over from Jonathan McKinstry.

While his initial spell with Uganda saw the team reach the 2019 AFCON, their first appearance in 39 years, the second stint witnessed a period of transition. Sredojevic’s departure had been a subject of speculation for some time, and it has now become a reality.
