Ugandan pop star Winnie Nwagi denies drug use rumors, calls claims ‘damaging’

In a sharp response to online accusations, the Swangz Avenue singer refuted claims she uses meth, linking the gossip to body shaming and click-driven misinformation.

Winnie Nwagi isn’t holding back.

After weeks of swirling online chatter accusing the Ugandan pop star of using hard drugs—specifically “ice,” a street name for crystal meth—the singer has publicly denied the rumors, calling them “damaging” and “malicious.”

The allegations appear to have gained traction through a TikTok blogger, who pointed to Nwagi’s recent weight loss as supposed evidence. But the Swangz Avenue artist says the claims aren’t just false—they’re reckless.

“When they see body changes, they do not do research,” Nwagi said after a recent performance. “Just because they are looking for views, they sit and say all this. You cannot say such a thing about my brand.”

Known for her high-energy, no-holds-barred shows, Nwagi’s on-stage intensity has long been mistaken for something else. Online speculation has painted her as a performer under the influence—something she firmly rejects.

In fact, she says the opposite is true.

“I go on stage very sober,” she said. “Drinking reduces my energy. I cannot handle doing what I do while drunk. I’ll end up struggling with my voice.”

Instead, Nwagi credits energy boosters and raw adrenaline for the fire she brings to the mic. She insists that staying sober is a deliberate choice rooted in professionalism and respect for her fans.

“That is my natural energy,” she added. “When I get to the stage, I have a job of entertaining my fans because they have their reasons as to why they chose me.”

For many in Uganda, Nwagi represents a rare blend of talent and authenticity—a performer who doesn’t mince words, on or off the stage. And for now, she’s making it clear: her act doesn’t come with a chemical assist.
