KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — At the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, US, the winners of the 2022 American Music Awards (AMAs) were announced on 20 November, with Nigerian duo Wizkid and Tems emerging as the biggest African winners.
- At the American Music Awards last night, Wizkid won the ‘Favourite Afrobeats Artist’ award, beating out fellow Nigerian pop stars Burna Boy, Tems, Fireboy DML and CKay to bring home the prize.
- The award Wizkid received at the 2022 American Music Awards follows the release of his fifth album, More Love, Less Ego, which comprises 13 tracks.
- Also, Tems won the category for Favourite Hip Hop Song for Future’s ‘WAIT FOR U’. The news follows the ‘Try Me’ singer surpassing one billion streams on Spotify across all credits. In reaching this billion milestone, Tems joins Burna Boy, Wizkid, CKay, and Davido.
- As this year’s most nominated act with six nominations, Taylor Swift won each category she was shortlisted for, including Artist of the Year, making her the most decorated American Music Award winner ever with 40 career awards.
This year marks the Golden Jubilee of the American Music Awards (AMAs), which honor the best achievements by the most popular artists and outstanding albums of the year.
Wizkid won the ‘Favourite Afrobeats Artist’ award at the 2022 American Music Awards by beating out other Nigerian pop stars, including Burna Boy, Tems, Fireboy DML, and CKay, who were also nominated.
The successful win for Wizkid follows on the heels of the release of his latest album More Love, Less Ego, which consists of 13 songs and was released on 11 November.
In addition to winning the ‘Favourite Afrobeats Artist category’, Wizkid also won the ‘Best Collaboration Category’ alongside Tems for the song they collaborated on, ‘Essence,’ whose remix topped the same category at the BET Awards 2022.
The ‘Try Me’ singer won the Favourite Hip Hop Song category for her performance on Future’s ‘WAIT FOR U’.
During this past week, Tems has surpassed one billion Spotify streams across all credits. Tems joins Burna Boy, Wizkid, CKay, and Davido in reaching this milestone.
A big win for Taylor Swift
With six nominations to her credit, the US artist Taylor Swift earned each award she was shortlisted for, including the Artist of the Year award, making her the most decorated artist in American Music Awards history.
