Jinja — The 2024 Uganda Waragi Nyege Nyege Festival—one of Africa’s biggest music fests—is making a comeback, this time with a fresh twist. Get ready for the new “Afrogalactic Carnival” and an immersive “Nyege in the City” daytime experience to bring out the best of Jinja.

Organizers are upping the ante, promising festival-goers a richer taste of Jinja’s vibes and scenery, all during the four-day fest running from November 14-17. The idea? To give everyone a uniquely Ugandan experience that celebrates local culture, stunning landscapes, and even a few unexpected adventures off the main festival grounds.

For its ninth year, Nyege Nyege is adding the “Nyege in the City” lineup, letting people check out what Jinja has to offer. Picture this: guided tours through the city, scenic dining spots, and water activities on the Nile. With the festival site closed each day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for security checks, this daytime option keeps things interesting and helps boost the city’s cultural footprint.

Working with Jinja City Authority, the festival team is focusing on bringing in more local flavor and helping out local businesses. They’re betting that by partnering with Jinja’s own, they can bring big-time benefits to the area and make a real impact.

“Uganda Waragi is thrilled to bring the best of Uganda to the forefront,” said Francis Nyende, the marketing manager for Mainstream Spirits at Uganda Breweries. “We’re showcasing Jinja’s rich music, culture, and heritage.” And yes, Uganda Waragi’s signature Lemon and Ginger flavor will be part of the mix, bringing a taste of local spirit to the celebration.

The main action takes place on Jinja’s scenic golf course, with an evening setup designed for both intimacy and high energy. Expect a mix of stages, including the returning Dark Star Stage with its experimental African acts, plus the Spirit of Uganda Stage celebrating the country’s multicultural essence. Other stages include the main stage, Hakuna Kulala, Uganda Waragi, and a reggae stage headlined by Jamaican artist Cali P.

Derek Debru, CEO of the Uganda Waragi Nyege Nyege Festival, shared that this year’s event aims to back Uganda’s creative sector, spotlighting new talent while honoring the country’s roots. In collaboration with local cultural fests and dance troupes, it’s set to be an event like no other.

Over ten dance troupes, a lineup of DJs, and a blend of global musicians are on board. Headliners? You’ve got Ugandan stars like Zex Bilangilangi, Pia Pounds, Recho Ray, and Kenneth Mugabi, plus international talents like South African DJ RMBO, French folk artist Emmanuele Parennin, and Congolese electronic musician Nkisi.

This “Nyege in the City” program is a team effort with Talent Africa Group, and CEO Aly Alibhai confirmed their partnership with Jinja City Authorities and local businesses. “Our goal is to give attendees a true taste of Jinja and Uganda, all through secure, top-notch local partnerships,” he shared.
