Architect Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, Nigeria’s new Minister for Housing and Urban Development, has assumed the chairmanship of Shelter Afrique’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) Bureau, succeeding Babatunde Raji Fashola.
KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Architect Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister for Housing and Urban Development, has taken over the chairmanship of Shelter Afrique’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) Bureau, succeeding his predecessor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, CON.
Transition of Leadership
Hon. Fashola assumed the Bureau’s chairmanship from Zimbabwe’s Minister for National Housing and Social Amenities, Hon. Daniel Garwe, during the Company’s 42nd Annual General Meeting held in Abuja, Nigeria, in May of this year.
Arc. Dangiwa’s appointment to lead the Minister for Housing and Urban Development marked the transfer of leadership to him from Hon. Fashola.
New Responsibilities for Arc. Dangiwa
As the new AGM bureau chairman, Arc. Dangiwa’s initial tasks include presiding over Shelter Afrique’s Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), scheduled from 3rd to 6th October 2023, at the Centre International de Conferences (CIC) in Algiers, Algeria. During this event, shareholders will consider approving the revised Statutes of the Institution.
Additionally, he will oversee the successful execution of the Company’s 43rd AGM, slated for the next year in Kigali, Rwanda.
Deputy Chairpersons and Future Hosts
Arc. Dangiwa will be supported by Rwanda’s Minister for Infrastructure, Dr. Ernest Nsabimana, and Mr. Mohamed Tarek Belaribi, Algeria’s Minister for Housing, Urban Planning, and City, as deputy chairpersons. Algeria is also set to host Shelter Afrique’s 44th AGM in 2025.
Support and Collaboration
Welcoming Arc. Dangiwa, Shelter Afrique’s Board Chairperson, Dr. Chii Akporji, assured the Minister of the Board of Directors, Management, and Staff’s support. Dr. Akporji emphasized the organization’s commitment to working closely with the Minister’s Office to ensure the success of his tenure.
Key Initiatives and Outstanding Obligations
Dr. Akporji briefed Arc. Dangiwa on Shelter Afrique’s operations in Nigeria, including the historic Naira-denominated bond launched early last year.
He also discussed other important initiatives, such as the Statutes Revision Process, seeking the Minister’s strong support for the approval of the Agreement document, a critical step toward consolidating the organization’s growth.
Furthermore, Dr. Akporji noted the organization’s need for the Minister’s intervention in addressing Nigeria’s outstanding capital subscription of US$21 million, approved by the previous administration but yet to be released by the end of its tenure.
“We have briefed Arc. Dangiwa on Shelter Afrique’s operations in Nigeria including the historic Naira-denominated bond which debuted early last year. We have also briefed the Minister on other key undertakings within the Organization – including the Statutes Revision Process, which we would like to seek his strong support for the approval of the Agreement document. This is necessary for consolidating the gains made so far in placing Shelter Afrique on a solid path to growth,” added Dr. Akporji.
Nigeria’s Role as a Key Stakeholder
Currently, Nigeria is the second-largest shareholder of Shelter Afrique, following Kenya.
