Makindye, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Music promoter Abbey Misinguzi, known as Abitex, was acquitted of 13 counts of negligence in the deaths of 11 people at a New Year’s Eve concert in Freedom City, Kampala. The charges were dropped due to lack of witnesses.
Abitex was granted bail in January after a week in prison, having pleaded not guilty.
He and event MC Elvis France Juuko were jointly charged. Juuko allegedly ordered the crowd outside, leading to a stampede and the tragic deaths and injuries.
The prosecution claimed Abitex and Juuko acted negligently on December 31, 2022, and January 1, 2023, causing the deaths.
It was also alleged that Abitex left only one small gate open, making it difficult for over 2 million people to exit safely.
