Standard Bank, Africa’s biggest lender by assets, said its chief engineering officer, Alpheus Mangale, resigned after a series of system outages this year that left many of the bank’s customers unable to access their online banking services.
KAMPALA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Alpheus Mangale, the Chief Engineering Officer at Standard Bank, resigned after a series of system outages in recent months resulting in customers not being able to use many of the bank’s services. Standard Bank’s assets make it Africa’s biggest lender by assets.
- Following a series of system outages in recent months, Standard Bank Group’s chief engineering officer Alpheus Mangale has resigned with immediate effect.
- From 2017 to 2020, Mangale served as the bank’s chief information officer. He previously held positions as enterprise officer at MTN and managing director at Cisco South Africa.
- The latest system outage for Standard Bank occurred on May 21, when customers were unable to pay for transactions at the point of sales devices or withdraw cash for more than six hours.

Standard Bank said in a press release on Friday that Alphaeus Mangale, the group’s chief engineering officer and the executive who was accountable for the stability of the IT systems, has resigned with immediate effect.
A major system outage at Standard Bank occurred on May 21, when customers were unable to make payments or withdraw money from point of sale devices for over six hours.
“Over the past two months, the Standard Bank Group has had a series of system outages with a negative impact on our clients and our employees.
“Since the major outage on 21 May 2022, our priority has been to stabilise our systems, ensure that services to our clients are fully restored, investigate and remove the causes of these outages, and demonstrate to our clients and colleagues that we are moving quickly and decisively to rebuild confidence in our systems,” the group said in a statement on Friday (3 June).
”The group’s chief engineering officer, Alpheus Mangale, as the senior executive accountable for the stability of our IT systems, has resigned from the group with immediate effect, it said”.
Mangale served as chief information officer between 2017 and 2020 before being appointed to the role of head of engineering at the bank.
He previously served as enterprise officer at MTN and as managing director of Cisco South Africa.
Going forward
Margaret Nienaber, who heads the group’s client solutions department, will oversee the engineering team, adding to her current responsibilities, the South African largest lender announced.
Nienaber has vast and deep experience in all aspects of the financial services industry, the lender said.
