Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) President Sarah Babirye Kityo has been remanded to Luzira prison by the Anti-Corruption court over charges of false accounting amounting to Shs 186 million. Babirye appeared before Magistrate Christopher Opito, denying the charges of making false accounts with the intent to defraud between November and December 2021.

The prosecution, led by State Attorney Gloria Inzikuru, revealed that the money in question, released by the National Council of Sports (NCS), was intended for the Pent Series and African National Championship in Namibia. Inzikuru requested an adjournment to conclude investigations.

Babirye’s lawyers sought bail, asserting her fixed residence and commitment to trial attendance. They highlighted ongoing investigations by multiple authorities and emphasized Babirye’s cooperation. Sureties included her husband Daniel Ntare, sports agent; Adam Kayira, director of Kingston High School; and her sister Diana Tumukunde, a businesswoman.

Prosecution objected to bail, citing controversies over sureties’ residences and the need for further verification of their financial capacities. Inzikuru requested more time for document verification and bail hearing is set for December 1.

Babirye, a former Youth MP, had previously faced charges of obtaining money by false pretense in May. Allegedly defrauding individuals with promises of trips to the United States, she and accomplices denied the charges. Babirye had earlier been sent on forced leave amid allegations of abuse of office and financial mismanagement, pending investigation by a committee appointed by Minister of Sports and Education Janet Kataaha Museveni.
