Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Al-Hajji Abdul Nsereko, a seasoned broadcaster and politician, has passed away. Having worked at Radio Uganda and later at Uganda Broadcasting Services (UBC) in various roles, including director, he succumbed to cardiac arrest around 1:00 am on Wednesday. His son, Muhammad Nsereko, who is also the Kampala Central Member of Parliament, confirmed the news.

Speaking from his residence in Bugolobi, Nsereko expressed his shock, as his father appeared lively and showed no signs of serious illness when they were together on Tuesday evening. Although Al-Hajji Nsereko was diabetic, the suddenness of his passing caught his family off guard. Notably, he had been single since losing his wife (the MP’s mother) in 2009 and chose not to remarry. Survived by 18 children, Al-Hajji Nsereko’s death marks the end of an era.

The legislator announced that prayers will be held at Kibuli Mosque at 9:00 am on Thursday. Subsequently, the body will be transported to Bulika, Nama Sub County in Mukono district, for burial at 2:00 pm.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, expressed his condolences via social media, remembering Alhaj Nsereko Abdul as a mentor in politics during their university days. Tayebwa acknowledged Nsereko’s significant contributions to the country and praised his son, Hon. Alhaj Nsereko Mohamed, for upholding the family legacy. May his soul rest in eternal peace, Tayebwa added.

Kateregga Musaazi, the Kimaanya-Kabonera Deputy Resident City Commissioner, mourned the loss of Nsereko, stating that he would be missed in journalism and the National Resistance Movement (NRM). Musaazi shared personal memories of their interactions, emphasizing Nsereko’s roles as a parent and friend in journalism, the Muslim community, and the NRM fraternity.

I join the country in mourning Alhaj Nsereko Abdul, who passed away today morning. During our university days, Alhaj mentored most of us in politics. He has served the country in several capacities, and I’m glad his son Hon. Alhaj Nsereko Mohamed has kept the family legacy… pic.twitter.com/iOjmuvMNRu
