Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — The National Unity Platform (NUP) wants Masaka MP Mathias Mpuuga to step down as parliamentary commissioner after he admitted to receiving 500 million shillings. NUP President Bobi Wine met with party leaders to address corruption allegations against Mpuuga and other officials. Mpuuga owned up to irregular money allocation during the meeting and apologized.
“In light of this, he was strongly advised that the moral thing to do in the circumstances is to step down from his role as parliamentary commissioner with immediate effect,” the NUP statement said.
Online protests using #UgandaParliamentExhibition exposed alleged abuse of office and mismanagement in Parliament. Speaker Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, and MPs from both ruling NRM and opposition faced accusations of fraudulent job lobbying and corruption.
Parliament acknowledged the concerns raised in the exhibition, with Director of Communication Chris Obore stating, “In the spirit of openness, accountability, and transparency, we are duty-bound to study the specifics of all concerns and conclusively address them.”
