Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has made the decision to withdraw charges against Patrick Kasaija, also known as Pato, a figure previously considered a central suspect in the kidnapping and subsequent tragic murder of Susan Magara.

In a recent update, senior state attorney Irene Nakimbugwe informed the High Court about the DPP’s intent to drop the charges against Kasaija. She presented a nolle prosequi, affirming this decision, along with an amended indictment and summary of evidence to the High Court criminal division’s acting deputy registrar, Didas Muhumuza. The trial, now set to commence on October 23, 2023, will be presided over by Justice Alex Ajiji.

The journey of Patrick Kasaija in this case dates back to 2018 when he was initially identified by the state as the alleged mastermind behind Susan Magara’s kidnapping and tragic murder. Following the arrest of some suspects, Kasaija, alongside Byensi Yakoub and Zahra, were named as missing suspects involved in the heinous crime.

The investigators maintained that Kasaija, also known as ‘Pato,’ had left Uganda for South Africa, carrying the ransom money paid by the Magara family after her murder. President Museveni intervened, leading to Pato’s extradition from South Africa back to Uganda.

Intriguingly, Kasaija’s actions and movements, particularly around the time of the ransom payment, raised suspicion. However, it’s vital to remember that the suspect is innocent until proven guilty, and his case continues to unfold within the legal process.

The Susan Magara case remains a tragic and complex one, involving multiple individuals and a heart-wrenching sequence of events. As the trial unfolds, it is essential to examine each aspect with a discerning eye and an emphasis on truth and justice.
