Wilson Masalu Musene is dead
Musene, who was residing in Soroti, died in Mbale on Sunday evening.

Musene had officially retired on March 6, 2021, after reaching the retirement age of 65, but was allowed three extra months to wind up any pending chamber work. However, in April 2021, he was sent on forced leave ahead of his retirement.

The Principal Judge, Dr Flavian Zeija, instructed Justice Musene to take annual leave for the remaining 52 days, although he had three extra months to wind up pending chamber work.

The US Department of Treasury had imposed financial sanctions and visa restrictions on Justice Musene, along with retired Justice Moses Mukiibi, advocate Dorah Mirembe and her husband Patrick Ecobu in August 2020.

The sanctions were a result of their alleged involvement in activities that victimised young children in a corrupt adoption scheme.

The trio was indicted for participating in a scam that saw young children removed from their families in Uganda and placed into a corrupt adoption network, facilitated by officials.

The passing of the retired High Court judge marks a sombre moment in Uganda’s legal landscape.

Details regarding the final resting place of Justice Musene have yet to be announced.

Musene’s death marks the second loss for Uganda’s judiciary this year, after the death of Constitutional court justice Kenneth Kakuru, who was still a serving judge.
