Mbarara, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — President Yoweri Museveni has expressed his condolences following the passing of Maitland Lawrence Rukaari, the father of Mbarara North MP Robert Mwesigwa Rukaari. Mr. Rukaari, a well-known figure in Ankole sub-region for his farming and business endeavors, succumbed to diabetes at the age of 89 at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital on Monday, October 23.
At the funeral held in Nkokonjeru ward in Mbarara City, President Museveni, represented by Minister of State for Animal Industry and Isingiro North MP Bright Rwamirama, shared a personal connection with the Rukaari family. He mentioned that his late mother, Esiteeri Kokundeka, belonged to the Beene Rukaari clan, and the late Rukaari was a maternal cousin’s brother. President Museveni acknowledged the family’s historical contributions to the liberation struggle and the development of present-day Mbarara.
Expressing his shock at the news of Rukaari’s passing, President Museveni contributed UGX 10 million toward the funeral expenses.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa praised Rukaari as a distinguished farmer and elder who played a significant role in Ankole sub-region’s development. He also highlighted Rukaari’s legacy in raising and educating children who contribute to the nation’s future.
Justice Minister and Democratic Party President Norbert Mao emphasized the wide-reaching impact of Rukaari’s life, noting that the gathering at the funeral was a testament to the love and respect he had garnered throughout his life.

Maitland Lawrence Rukaari, survived by seven children from his first marriage to Evas, who passed away in 2002, and later married Jane Rukaari, had a fulfilling life as a transporter, farmer, and businessman across several regions in Uganda, leaving behind a rich legacy with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
