Kampala police have arrested four employees from Mezo Noir, a popular hangout in Kololo, as they investigate how a customer ended up drugged at the club.
Martha Ahumuza, a recent ISBAT University graduate, collapsed and was rushed to the hospital after reportedly consuming a spiked drink. She’s now on life support.
Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrests and said officers from Kira Road Police Station are handling the case.
“The victim met her friend, Edward Mugabo, a cashier at the bar, at 2:00 am, and they drank together until 3:30 am when they moved to the manager’s office, which has no CCTV cameras. That’s where she collapsed,” Onyango said.
Mugabo then called his brother, Joseph Kalenzi, and the two rushed Ahumuza to Kampala Hospital, where she was put on life support. Both brothers are now in police custody to help with the investigation.
Police also arrested two more employees on Thursday after they allegedly refused to grant detectives access to the club’s CCTV footage.
However, the footage police later obtained shows Ahumuza entering the manager’s office with Mugabo. About 30 minutes later, Mugabo is seen leaving the room in a panic, then returning with other staff members. Witnesses say she was later carried out through the club’s exit and taken to the hospital.
Following the incident, Mezo Noir announced on social media that it would remain closed “due to unforeseen circumstances.” By Friday, police had sealed off the club as they continued searching for evidence.
