Kampala, Uganda | NOW THEN DIGITAL — The National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced the appointment of Nakawa West MP Joel Ssenyonyi as the new Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), succeeding Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba. This decision was communicated by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the President of NUP, during a gathering at the party headquarters in Kampala.
Kyagulanyi emphasized that Mpuuga’s reassignment should not be perceived as a demotion but rather as a reflection of the party’s commitment to refreshing leadership. He praised Mpuuga for his commendable performance in the face of numerous challenges and thanked him for his leadership during challenging times.
Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, who previously held the position of LOP, has been appointed as Commissioner of Parliament, taking over from Francis Zaake. Zaake, in turn, has been appointed as the shadow Minister for the Presidency and Security, as well as Deputy Chief Whip.
Mpuuga, representing Nyendo-Mukungwe Division in Masaka City, expressed gratitude to Kyagulanyi for the opportunity to serve in the position for two and a half years. He emphasized that the journey is about advancing a better Uganda rather than holding specific positions. Mpuuga encouraged support for the new LOP and advised constructive engagement rather than undermining the efforts of the new leadership.
Joel Ssenyonyi, the newly appointed LOP, expressed gratitude to the party for the appointment. Despite acknowledging that he may not be the most experienced or educated in the team, he pledged to fulfill his responsibilities diligently. Ssenyonyi expressed his commitment to collaboration within the opposition, highlighting the shared goals that unite them.
In his statement, Ssenyonyi acknowledged the similarities among opposition members and emphasized the importance of working together for the common goal of contributing to positive change in Uganda.
Just like King Solomon prayed, I too pray for wisdom as I embark on this new role that comes with numerous challenges. By God's grace, we shall surmount all the obstacles ahead.
I salute Rt.Hon Mathias Mpuuga for his service, and I look forward to working with him and the other… pic.twitter.com/52bWuZ10Fy
