Byakagaba is stepping in for Martin Okoth-Ochola and will be joined by Assistant Inspector General of Police James Ochaya, who takes over from Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi as the deputy.

“I confirm that H.E. the President and Commander in Chief of the UPDF has today appointed Mr. Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police replacing IGP Martin Okoth Ochola,” announced Mr. Faruk Kirunda, deputy presidential spokesperson, on X (formerly Twitter), on Friday evening.

Byakagaba retired from the police force in March as an Assistant Inspector General of Police, passing on his responsibilities to SCP Frank Mwesigwa.

As the Director for Counter Terrorism, Byakagaba played a key role in operations against ADF terrorist cells across the country, helping to arrest those involved in criminal activities.
