Prof. Yunus Mgaya Inaugurated as Fourth Chancellor of Kampala International University

The inauguration ceremony took place at KIU and was presided over by Al Hajj Dr. Hassan Bassajja Balaba, the university's Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Prof. Yunus Mgaya, a Tanzanian scholar, has officially become the fourth chancellor of Kampala International University (KIU). 

KAMPALA, UGANDA | NOW THEN DIGITAL — Kampala International University (KIU) welcomed Prof. Yunus Mgaya as its fourth chancellor in a formal inauguration ceremony. The event, held at KIU, was presided over by Al Hajj Dr. Hassan BassajjaBalaba, the chairman of the university’s Board of Trustees.

Succession to Prof. Mahmood Mamdani

Prof. Yunus Mgaya replaces Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, who had served as the university’s chancellor since July 2020. The transition marks a new chapter for KIU and its leadership.

Acceptance Speech and Commitment

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Mgaya expressed his gratitude and humility upon being offered the chancellorship of the esteemed institution in Uganda.

He acknowledged the significance of nurturing young minds through higher education and expressed his eagerness to undertake this honorable task during his tenure as chancellor.

Tribute to Prof. Mahmood Mamdani

Prof. Mgaya paid tribute to his predecessor, Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, recognizing and appreciating the contributions he made to KIU during his time as chancellor.

He acknowledged the sacrifices made by Prof. Mamdani and assured the university community, stakeholders, and partners of his dedication to the institution’s mission.

Prof. Mgaya expressed his commitment to a fruitful and productive working relationship with all members of the KIU community and expressed gratitude for the warm welcome he received.

Background of Prof. Yunus Mgaya

Prof. Yunus Daud Mgaya is an accomplished administrator with a wealth of experience in various administrative positions at the University of Dar es Salaam. He is a distinguished Professor of Marine Biology at the same institution.

Educational Background and Achievements

Prof Yunus Mgaya new chancellor of KIU

Prof. Mgaya obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and Marine Biology from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1986. In pursuit of further academic growth, he joined the National University of Ireland-Galway in 1991 and successfully completed his Ph.D. in Marine Aquaculture in 1995.

Throughout his academic journey, Prof. Mgaya has received numerous awards, including recognition from the Commonwealth and the Irish Government.

Prof. Mgaya is an esteemed member of several professional bodies, including the Asian Fisheries Society and the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association. His involvement in these organizations highlights his dedication to advancing marine biology and related disciplines.
